Implants

Dental implants are used today to replace missing teeth.  The implants themselves are small titanium screws or rods that are placed into your upper or lower jaw and will support a crown or denture.  Implants are placed very comfortably in an office setting.  At times an implant can be placed immediately into the extraction site of a tooth if adequate bone remains.

There are several different implant companies on the market today; Dr. Hornaday uses the Zimmer Dental implant system in his office.  In most cases, your impression will be taken on the day of implant placement.  This not only minimizes your time in your dentist's chair but greatly reduces the amount of time before you have your final crown.

Benefits to implants:

bullet

When you have an area where teeth are missing, your bone starts to "go away".  By placing a dental implant, this virtually eliminates the loss of bone and lends to a more healthy mouth.

bullet

An implant eliminates the need to cut down or prepare healthy teeth when replacing adjacent teeth.

Comfort.  Dental implants can secure a denture in place that would be otherwise ill-fitting.  This greatly reduces the tissue irritation and worries that a denture may fall out.

Depending on your situation, you may not have adequate bone and a bone graft may be required prior to implant placement.  At the time of your consultation, you will be evaluated for the presence of adequate bone and advised if a bone graft will be necessary.
